Companies have to announce maximum costs at the beginning of the call, giving callers the chance to hang up.

THE NETHERLANDS - Foreign trade minister Frank Heemskerk has announced that he has reached an agreement with companies which use 0900 numbers. The agreement stipulates that they must announce the maximum costs at the beginning of the call.

Currently, 0900 callers generally have little idea how much their call will cost.

The new agreement, under which they will be asked to wait and hear how much they must pay, means they will have the chance to hang up.

Mr Heemskerk believes this will stimulate companies to reduce waiting times and lower call rates. The ruling will come into force in the summer.
