The KNMI national weather centre has put four provinces in the south and east of the Netherlands on orange alert – warning of extremely severe storms. The whole country is on yellow alert which means that all areas may be hit by very bad weather.

A KNMI spokesperson says major thunder storms will move across the Netherlands from the southwest to the northeast. The storms, especially those in the south and southeast, may bring with them hail and winds gusting between 75 and 90 kilometres per hour.

The Lowlands pop festival is taking place in the central Netherlands and Rotterdam is hosting the Bavaria City Racing meeting today. The organisers of both events are keeping a close eye on weather developments. Earlier this week, a number of people died after a freak storm hit the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium.
