Tilburg council workers to receive police messages

The City Council of Tilburg, in the south of the Netherlands, is registering the mobile phones of 2,000 council workers for 'SMS Alert' text messages from the police.

AMSTERDAM -  The service sends information about crimes to members of the public in the vicinity who may be able to act as witnesses. Messages may include, for example, a description of a burglar thought to be active in a neighbourhood.

Tilburg Council is registering the phones of workers such as refuse collectors and parking wardens whose work takes them out and about. The hope is that the move will encourage more members of the public to volunteer to receive the police messages.
