The Hague supports tougher sanctions against Iran

The Hague supports a French proposal to tighten sanctions against Iran. Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal told parliament on Wednesday, “The path should be to tighten sanctions,” Nevertheless, the minister says he would have to know what new sanctions Paris had in mind before agreeing to them. He thinks any sanctions should target the regime and not the people of Iran. Parliament also urged for more sanctions after the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA concluded this week that Iran has been working on a nuclear weapon until last year at least.

Intervention was not on the agenda according to the minister. “I am not prepared to consider preventative attacks or military intervention,” he said.

European foreign ministers are due to meet in Brussels on Monday to discuss Iran where sanctions are expected to be discussed.
