The Hague summons Syrian ambassador

The Dutch foreign ministry has summoned the Syrian ambassador to voice “grave concern” over the ongoing violence in his country.

It is unacceptable that security forces kill demonstrators, foreign ministry officials told the ambassador. The ongoing violence flies in the faces of reform pledges, stresses the Dutch government, which has called on the Syrian leadership to open a dialogue with the opposition.

The Hague has called on Syria to allow foreign journalists to enter the country and to authorise diplomats to travel freely through it.

On Friday evening, hundreds of thousands again took to the streets to protest against President Assad. Security forces in the northern city of Idlib are reported to have shot dead three demonstrators. Police in Damascus and cities in the south are also said to have fired live rounds against protesters.
