The Netherlands has successfully defended its women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay title at the Swimming World Championships in Shanghai.

Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Marleen Veldhuis en Femke Heemskerk won gold with a time of three minutes, 33.96 seconds - 2,24 seconds slower than their world record. The United States was just 0.51 seconds behind to take silver, while Germany won bronze.

It was a fiercely fought contest. Dekker was the first to swim, after her disappointing performance in the 100m butterfly earlier in the day. She touched in seventh place, but Kromowidjojo and Veldhuis brought the Dutch back to challenge the Americans. Heemskerk clinched gold with a formidable performance timed at 52.46 seconds.
