Spanish police suspect the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed the coach.

Barcelona – The driver of the coach that crashed in northern Spain on Monday and killed one Dutch schoolgirl has been arrested.

The bus taking 53 Dutch teenagers and 6 supervisors to Barcelona careered off Spanish A7 motorway exit road and overturned, killing 15-year-old Ilse Beekers instantly.

The Dutch consul says six of the 19 injured teenagers remain in the hospital but are not suffering from severe injuries.

The Dutch media describes Beekers as "a quiet girl with a warm personality and a passionate love of horses"

Messages of condolence were posted on her personal internet page, among them: "So young and still so many dreams to be fulfilled. And now it's just one big nightmare..."

Meanwhile, the Dutch consul in Spain reports that Spanish police suspect the driver of extremely careless driving. They are also investigating whether the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.

The driver has said he swerved to avoid "something" crossing the road.

Parents of the teenagers from Canisius College went through the darkest hours of their lives" Monday as they waited for more information of the accident, reported AD.

Contradictory reports and lack of information meant that parents assembled at the school knew that one pupil had died but did not know his or her identity. Many of the pupils could not be contacted because their mobile phones were lost among the wreckage.

The first of the Dutch pupils will arrive in the Netherlands by air on Tuesday afternoon.
