In Dutch tradition, the Bishop of Myra sails from Spain to the Netherlands every year to celebrate his birthday in December.

THE NETHERLANDS – His steamship arrived in Almere harbour on Saturday, where he was met by town mayor Annemarie Jorritsma.
He was accompanied by dozens of Black Petes who threw sweets to the crowds of children and their parents.

On 5 December, the eve of Saint Nicolas' birthday, Dutch families exchange gifts, poems and chocolate letters.
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, many children will put their shoes in front of the fireplace hoping to find a present in them in the morning.

Luckily the financial crisis does not appear to have affected to festive mood and the saint is expected to be just as generous as he is every year.
But only if you have been a good boy or girl.
