Police tackle 40 percent of youth gangs

In the past few months, the police have taken action against 40 percent of the nation’s youth gangs.

Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten says this does not mean that the gangs have been rounded up, but that their “group dynamic has been disrupted.”

More specifically, charges have been brought against a number of members of these criminal gangs, while some of them have been remanded in custody.

The justice ministry says there are 89 criminal youth gangs in the Netherlands, of which 39 have now been ‘tackled’.

Minister Opstelten says he is very pleased with the results so far. He added that he wants the police to take action against the remaining 50 gangs in the next two years.

The justice ministry has reserved 120 prison cells in Bijlmer prison near Amsterdam for youth gang members to ensure they can be detained immediately when arrested.

In prison, they are to take part in a special programme for youth gang members intended to get them back on the straight and narrow.
