One in seven households 'has trouble paying the bills'

One in seven households in the Netherlands is having trouble paying their bills, causing half of them sleepless nights, RTL news reports on Friday.

Some 36% of households have failed to pay a bill on time and healthcare bills are the most likely to be left too late, the broadcaster says. The figures come from debt collection agency GGN.

Healthcare bills are most likely to be skipped because there are few sanctions and people can continue to visit the doctor or hospital even if they don't pay, GGN director Henk Keizer told the broadcaster.

'I'm not in favour of telling people who don't pay their insurance premiums they won't get treatment... but we do need to make people better aware of their obligations,' Keizer is quoted as saying.
