Over 50 percent of Dutch nationals polled said the country is paying too much to the European Union even though only 13 percent were able to name the amount paid.

The Netherlands – Over 50 percent of Dutch nationals feel the Netherlands pays too much to the EU, according to a poll of 1,000 people.

The poll, commissioned by Dutch television programme Europe in 10 ergernissen (Europe in 10 annoyances), asked respondents what they deemed was irritating about the European Union.

Top on the list of grievances of most Dutch people was the amount pay to the EU although only 13 percent of respondents were able to name the amount each Dutch citizen pay the union – EUR 275.

Almost half respondents polled felt that the euro increased the cost of living. Other annoyances include the dull European image and open borders which have attracted an influx of foreign workers to come the Netherlands.

As low turnout is expected for the European Parliament elections Thursday, Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond said the outcome will be difficult to predict. The right-wing Freedom Party is expected to make gains on an anti-EU platform.

Europe in 10 ergernissen will be broadcast Tuesday night.
