Most former farmland used for new homes

Over 80 percent of the 85,000 hectares of farmland released for development between 1996 and 2008 was used for residential areas, industrial estates or traffic junctions, newspaper reports.

Just 7,000 hectares of agricultural land were converted into nature, the paper says, quoting a study it commissioned from the Agricultural Economic Institute. Around 8,000 hectares were converted into flooding zones.

The study’s findings belie Deputy Agriculture Minister Henk Bleker's claim that environmental groups have been taking possession of valuable farmland.
