An aircraft chartered by Moroccan flag carrier Royal Air Maroc had to make an emergency landing late Sunday shortly after taking off from Amsterdam Schiphol airport due to an engine problem, the Dutch air control service said.

"An aircraft of Royal Air Maroc which had a problemn with one of its two engines after taking off turned around back to Schiphol and landed safely," spokeswoman Marjolein Weiting told AFP. She said she did not know the reasons for the technical problem.

Nobody was hurt and the airport, one of Europe's biggest hubs, continued to function normally, she said.

Airport spokeswoman Kathelyne Vermeulen told AFP the Boeing 737-400 was heading for Nador, in northeastern Morocco.
