"More than half of ex-MPs on benefits"

28 August 2007

HAARLEM – Former members of Parliament have a tough time on the labour market, weekly magazine Intermediair has concluded on the basis of its own survey.

Of the 70 MPs who are no longer in Parliament since the elections last November, 39 are making partial or full use of the government redundancy pay scheme.

Ten MPs have returned to a fulltime political job or retired. Of the remaining 60 only ten are not making use of the special unemployment benefits to which they are entitled. These ten have found jobs that pay more than the benefits.

Nine former MPs did not want to take part in the survey and two could not be reached.

Former MPs are entitled to redundancy pay of about EUR 6,200 a month for a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of six years.
