MP calls for rail bosses to resign

The conservative VVD thinks the management of the Dutch railways NS and the company which maintains the rail network ProRail should resign because of disruption to train services during the wintery weather.

VVD MP Charlie Aptroot told Dutch daily and a television programme that the board of commissioners of the two rail companies should stand down quickly. Mr Aptroot says the management is too inward looking and has failed to inform passengers adequately about disruption to services.

It is not the first time he has called for the rail management to go. In November, during the first period of wintery weather he criticised the management of ProRail for disruption due to a fire in the traffic control centre in Utrecht. Last January, he also called for heads to roll due to the problems caused by prolonged snow and ice. Last year, trains services were completely out of action for three days, when the first heavy snow fell in the week leading up to Christmas.

Then the main problem was freezing points. The Dutch railways had hoped that last year's problems had been solved. The NS held a rehearsal for its winter strategy on one of the warmest days of the summer. There were even advertisements made claiming the NS was ready for the winter. Unfortunately, the company had not expected its newest trains to perform so badly in the snow. The new Sprinters are responsible for much of the disruption in services.
