Nine percent of the 30,000 people of foreign descent who got married in the Netherlands last year 'imported' their partner from their country of origin. In most cases, these import partners came from either Turkey or Morocco.

Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch statistics office, reports that the number of migration marriages grew by 400 last year to 2,800. A migration marriage is defined as a marriage involving a partner who came from the migrant country of origin specifically for that purpose.

The number of people of foreign descent who got married grew by 6 percent, the increase being mostly among migrants from non-Western countries as a result of the growing number of 20 to 30-year-olds in that demographic.
