It's official: flu epidemic in Netherlands

13th January 2011, Comments 2 comments

The Netherlands has been hit by a flu epidemic. A medical monitoring group has confirmed that the incidence of the contagious affliction has risen to 87 in 100,000, which is well above the epidemic threshhold of 51 per 100,000.

Spokesman Carl Koppeschaar for the monitoring group emphasises that it is difficult to tell which proportion of these influenza cases are instances of AH1N1 Mexican flu.

The group, which is made up of general practitioners, mathematicians and biologists, says it is impossible to predict how long the Dutch flu epidemic will last. Other European countries are showing similar rises, although the incidence of the flu in Flanders Belgium is falling.

@LJK-- you are right! The H1N1 variant has been traced back to a hog farm in North Carolina (U.S.). It's a by-product of factory farming and a sign of things to come.
