Famous Dutch-bred show jumping horse Hickstead died suddenly during the World Cup qualifier in the Italian city of Verona on Sunday.

The 15-year-old stallion won the individual gold and team silver medal for Canadian jumper Eric Lamaze at the 2008 Hongkong Olympics. Other victories include the prestigious GPs in Aachen and Calgary.

Lamaze had just jumped the final of 13 obstacles when Hickstead collapsed, probably as the result of a heart attack. The competition was abandoned at the request of the remaining 17 riders, who entered the arena on foot to pay tribute to Hickstead with a minute’s silence

Hickstead was bred by the stables of Jan van Schijndel in the town of Maren-Kessel in the south of the Netherlands.
