The Netherlands is pushing for European Union observers of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s November elections to begin their work earlier than planned.

Dutch Development Aid Minister Ben Knapen held talks in Congo on Monday with Congolese Foreign Minister Thambwe Mwambe who was positive about the Dutch move.

Congo’s presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled for 27 November. Mr Knapen told the minister of his worries at reports that journalists, NGO staff and political activists face intimidation, the danger of kidnap and sometimes even of murder in the run-up to polling day in Congo.
