Bicycle sales remain unaffected even as Dutch economy showed signs of slowing down in the last few months of 2008.

THE NETHERLANDS – The Dutch spent EUR 905 million on bicycles in 2008, said transport organisation BOVAG.

The 7 percent increase in sales is mainly due to the increased numbers of electric bicycles sold. Bicycle sales were also not affected by the economic downturn in the last quarter of 2008.

People will continue to cycle, no matter how the economy fares, said BOVAG.

The organisation expects good sales for traditional bicycles in 2009 and added that the downturn may even increase the number of cyclists and result in more bicycles sold.
