As the Dutch prepare for a weekend of blissful skating on the country's frozen lakes and waterways, the world's top speed skaters have been battling it out on the track at the European Skating Championships in Heerenveen.

THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch world champion Sven Kramer has come a step closer to winning his third European Allround title in a row.

He won the five kilometres, and in the 500 metres he was also faster than his main rival, Norwegian skater Havard Bökko.

Italian competitor Enrico Fabris was disqualified in the 500 metres. Sven Kramer is leading in the overall rankings after the first day, with Wouter Olde Heuvel in second place.

The women skaters take to the ice on Saturday.
