Dutch police training mission may start sooner

Dutch police trainers may be able to start training their Afghan counterparts in the province of Kunduz earlier than planned.

The foreign ministry announced on Thursday that a successfully concluded NATO pilot involving an eight-week training period instead of the regular six weeks has prompted an accelerated introduction of the new training method.

The new time frame will also apply to the Dutch police training mission in Kunduz, where basic training was scheduled to start in January.

The ministry says it is pleased with the decision to accelerate introduction of the longer training, which was partly conceived by the Netherlands to improve the quality of police training. The longer period also makes it possible to spend more time on human rights and literacy.
