Dutch police seize illegal fireworks

Dutch police have found large quantities of powerful illegal fireworks during raids on homes up and down the country. More than 20 people were arrested during the operation.

The fireworks were smuggled into the country from Poland via a Dutch transport company which had no knowledge this was taking place. Police say they have seized more than 3,100 kilos of the illegal explosives.

The police had been investigating more than 240 shipments of the dangerous fireworks, which were ordered over the internet. The nationwide operation is part of efforts by Dutch police in recent years to clamp down on the trade in illegal fireworks.

Dutch law stipulates that the public may only ignite fireworks on New Year's Eve and during the initial hours of New Year's Day, otherwise special permission is required. Permitted types of these explosives may only be sold by licensed businesses to adult members of the general public and only in the period immediately preceding the New Year festivities.
