Dutch in top five of transparent donors

The Dutch Foreign Ministry is one of the most transparent donors in the world.

It came fourth in the annual index from Publish What You Fund. This is a British organisation which aims to promote transparency and effectiveness in the global aid sector.

Top of the list was the World Bank, followed by the Global Fund and the African Development Bank. The UK’s Department for International Development came in fifth place. Bottom of the list were Bulgaria, Greece, China, Cyprus and Malta.

Publish What You Fund says the openness of donor countries is generally moderate to very poor. Even major donors like the United States, Canada, Germany and Japan do not provide clear information about where the money goes.

PWYF points out that lack of transparency results in waste and inefficiency. It also makes it very difficult to determine objectively the effectiveness of development aid.
