Dutch football: Groningen sail past Excelsior

17th September 2011, Comments 0 comments

FC Groningen have notched up their second victory of the season beating Excelsior 2-0.

The first half was deplorable. Groningen often had ball possession but had no clue what to do with it. Excelsior seemed positively keen not to gain ball possession.

Mitchell te Vrede was the only Excelsior player to venture a shot but the ball went wide. Fortunately there was at least one goal. When Brian van Loo, Groningen’s goalie, hit the ball deep and the Excelsior defence failed to take action, Wesley de Ruiter only had to touch the ball to bring the score to 1-0.

The second half got off to a flying start with a header on the crossbar quickly followed by a goal, both by Petter Andersson.

Excelsior was ripe for demolition but was spared any further harm thanks to De Ruiter’s saves and Groningen’s sloppy attitude.
