Dutch Foreign minister too reticent

The Christian Democrats CDA, part of the ruling coalition, have joined the opposition Christian Union CU party in calling for more international action to stop the violence in Syria. CDA MP Henk Jan Ormel says that Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has been taking “too reticent” a line on the issue.

Earlier, CU MP Joël Voordewind called on Mr Rosenthal to push within Europe and the United Nations for a Security Council resolution on Syria. This would make it clear to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad that the international community will not tolerate violence against Syrian citizens.

Different On Sunday, Mr Rosenthal explained during a television programme that the situation in Syria is different to that in Libya. At present, NATO has secured a no-fly zone over Libya following a UN Security Council resolution. In Syria, the regime is still in control of the country. The political situation is also different as the country has close relations with Iran and Lebanon.

However, the minister does agree that as much international pressure as possible should be put on Damascus. He wants European aid to the tune of 130 million euros to be frozen.
