Dutch Bank president: budget rules can be broken

President of De Netherlandsche Bank (the Dutch Bank), Nout Wellink thinks the government should be prepared to drop budget rules if the recession makes it necessary to do so.

THE NETHERLANDS - In a television programme on politics, Mr Wellink said it is sometimes necessary to bring spending forward from future budgets.

He said this is the case for example with road and building construction projects.

On Saturday Christian Union parliamentary party chairman Arie Slob said budget rules have to be broken in emergencies
