Teen drunks should pay for own hospital treatment: survey

Eight out of 10 Dutch adults think teenagers who end up in hospital because they have drunk too much should have to pay all or part of the bill themselves.

Most people also think smokers should pay for help with breaking the habit, the survey by the national statistics office CBS found.

The CBS was looking into how willing people are to pay towards medical treatment for people who live unhealthy life styles.

The survey showed a large majority support paying for help for people who have psychological problems caused by depression or the death of a loved one.

Opinion is divided about who should pay for fertility treatment with 46% saying the patient should pick up some of the bill.

However, opinion is affected by people’s own personal situation, the CBS points out.

Smokers are twice as likely as non-smokers to support treatment coming from the public purse. And the over-65s are more likely than youngsters to back help with paying for walking aids.
