DAF plans big savings

Truck manufacturer DAF has announced that it intends to save 100 million euros this year.

THE NETHERLANDS - This is in response to a sharp drop in sales caused by the financial crisis. DAF currently produces 100 trucks a day.

Four months ago, the figure was 245.

The company has been making use of the government's reduced working hours scheme for 3,000 of its employees.

The scheme is designed to help companies that suffer a drop in production of more than 30 percent because of the crisis.

Employees who do not work receive a portion of their salaries from the company and the rest from the government.

However, DAF says that if permission to reduce working hours is not extended later this year, and if the economy shows no signs of recovery, it may well have to fire employees.
