AMSTERDAM - Police in Amsterdam have launched a campaign against "Italian-style" robberies.

Thieves on scooters pull up beside a car stopped before a traffic light. They open the car door or smash a window to grab valuables lying on a seat.

Police have increased patrols of the most common areas in the last few weeks but so far their activities have failed to reduce the thefts.

In one month, the number of thefts doubled to 50.

The campaign is designed to warn drivers of the dangers posed by such thieves and to encourage them to place valuables under the seats or in the boot while travelling.
