Cabinet says Israeli violence not disproportionate

The cabinet insists that the level of Israeli violence in the Gaza Strip cannot be labeled disproportionate.

AMSTERDAM –  In a parliamentary debate, Deputy Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans (Labour Party) counseled against a Labour Party motion labelling the level of violence excessive.

The deputy minister said the Netherlands has no objective information regarding Israeli military operations and therefore has no means of establishing whether Israel is using excessive violence. The motion is not expected to pass, as the other two coalition partners - the Christian Democratic CDA and the Christian Union - and the conservative opposition will vote against it.

The cabinet does not oppose an independent UN-sponsored inquiry should international organisations question whether the parties to the conflict are abiding by international laws of war. A motion reflecting this position - sponsored by the Labour Party and the CDA -will probably be adopted.
