Boats are gathering for the 30th edition of Amsterdam's canal festival on the Prinsengracht. The free classical music concert will begin this evening on a float in front of the Pulitzer Hotel.

To mark the special anniversary, several well-known musicians will take part in the leading performance on the main stage, including soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, pianist Ronald Brautigam, cellist Pieter Wispelwey and the Dutch wind orchestra the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. The artists will play solo and together from works by Chopin, Verdi, Guastavino and Rossini and other composers.

The open air concert is expected to attract thousands of spectators on boats and on the quayside. The festival has grown in recent years to include a number of other locations for floating and waterside concerts in the capital and lasts a week.

The first was held in 1981. Since 1984, performances have been televised.
