Blaze under control; Dutch evacuees return

About 300 people who were evacuated on Wednesday morning because of a huge fire in the Dutch town of Valkenswaard have been allowed to return home.

They had to leave because of noxious fumes and smoke belching out of a burning plastics recycling plant close to their homes. The building and two neighbouring factories burnt to the ground. Local firefighters had considerable difficulty extinguishing the blaze, and only on Thursday evening could they confirm they were in control.

Among the evacuees were 198 elderly people from a care home. No-one was injured.
