THE NETHERLANDS - The annual six-day trek along the Dutch coast has begun Monday in the southwestern region of Hoek van Holland.

Around 1,000 participants will walk a total of 140 kilometres, ending at the northern city of Den Helder. The daily stages range between 10 and 30 kilometres.

The hikers will sleep in tents pitched on the beach. It is the 50th time the march is being held. The first time, in 1959, 37 people took part.

The number of participants is limited to 1,000, though there are usually many more applicants.
