Amsterdam Hermitage: Splendour and Glory

18th January 2011, Comments 0 comments

The Amsterdam Hermitage will host an exposition of Russian religious art from 19 March to 16 September. The exhibition will include more than 300 religious artefacts representing centuries of mystical and artistic traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Among the artefacts will be icons, fragments of frescoes, robes, paintings, historical books and gold and silver attributes associated with church rituals. A large number of artefacts from the hermitage in St Petersburg will be on display in the Netherlands for the first time. The themes of the exhibition are the Byzantine origins and traditions of the Orthodox Church, religious feast days, of which Easter is the most important, and the tsars and their 'personal' church.
