Ahold announces bumper fourth quarter 2008

Supermarket group Ahold reports that it had a profitable fourth quarter last year.

AMSTERDAM -- The group owns stores in Europe and the United States, among them leading Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn. Its 2008 fourth quarter turnover was 6.6 billion dollars, an increase of almost 13 percent on the same period in 2007.

Ahold seems not to be suffering from the worldwide financial crisis. Over the Christmas period, its supermarkets apparently benefited from the fact that many people chose to eat at home rather than in restaurants. Over the whole of 2008, its turnover was 25.7 billion euros, up more than three percent on 2007.
