An estimated 4000 TNT postman went on strike on Wednesday, according to unions. This is a fifth of the staff in the departments where TNT Post wants to cut jobs. Wednesday was the first of a three-day strike in the Netherlands.

In spite of the industrial action, letters are still being delivered. "People should not be surprised if post lands on the doormat," said a spokesperson for TNT. But the spokesperson was unable to say how much post is not getting sorted up and down the country.

One union, the BVPP, has not joined the strike, as it does not believe the job losses can be prevented. Spokespersons for the FNV and CNV unions say many postal workers have joined their unions after leaving the BVPP.

Internet store Bol.com says the strike is costing it hundreds of thousands of euros, as it has had to find another company prepared to deliver orders the next day as promised.
