AMSTERDAM — French and Dutch health officials are looking for a Dutchman they fear may have been infected by a rabid dog.
The man, in his 40s, called himself Josephus and told people he met that he was an “independent biologist.” It is thought he is from Utrecht.
He was on a hitchhiking vacation in south west France in August when he came into contact with the animal and its owner on the docks in the city of Bordeaux. He may have been on his way to Spain, news agency Novum reported.
The Dutchman brings to eight the number of people still sought by authorities in connection with the rabies alert.
The European Commission issued an EU-wide rabies alert on August 28 after the rabid puppy was identified in southwest France.
The puppy, illegally imported from Morocco, was reportedly brought into France on July 11 by a resident of Bordeaux, officials said, and was infectious from August 2-21, when it died, news agency AFP reported.
