AMSTERDAM – Hours after the death of the former Dutch Queen, Princess Juliana, the government information service RVD has reported the birth of the sixth in line to the Dutch throne.
The baby boy was born to Princess Laurentien at 37 minutes after midnight on Sunday in the Bronovo hospital in The Hague. Named Claus-Casimir, he weighed just less than 4kg and was 52cm in height, the RVD said.
Princess Laurentien is married to Prince Constantijn, the third son of Queen Beatrix. The baby has been named Claus after the Queen’s husband who died in October 2002.
The baby’s full title is Claus-Casimir Bernhard Marius Max, Count of Oranje Naussau, Esquire of Amsberg. He is the Queen’s third grandchild and is sixth in line to the Dutch throne. Prince Constantijn described his son as “strong and healthy”.
In December 2003, Princess Maxima — wife of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander — gave birth to the future queen, Princess Amalia.
The RVD said Princess Laurentien and Prince Constantijn had experienced “double emotions” in a 24-hour period: sadness at the death of Constantijn’s grandmother, Princess Juliana, on Saturday morning and simultaneous joy at the birth of their second child.
Their first child, Eloise, was born on 8 June 2002.
The family will initially stay in Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague after Laurentien and her son leave hospital. They will move to Brussels in April.
