EUR 3.5m Dutch aid for Indonesia

The Dutch public has donated EUR 3.5 million for the victims of the earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java. SHO, the joint appeal fund operated by Dutch aid groups, said the money will be used to cover the costs of the initial relief operation.

Dutch woman dies in Turkish bombing

A Dutch woman was among the four fatalities in Sunday’s bombing in the Turkish city of Antalya, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry is not releasing the woman’s identity for privacy reasons.

‘Fewer rows if woman drives’

There is less chance of a row between heterosexual couples in a car if the woman drives, according to the findings of a survey carried out by auto accessories and bike chain Halfords. The researchers told newspaper ‘De Telegraaf’ that 76 percent of couples have arguments while on a journey in the car and half of the rows relate to map reading. The chances of map-related arguments are minimised if the woman drives.

Child, 7, dies in house fire

A girl, 7, died in a fire at her family home in Lelystad on Tuesday night. Her mother suffered serious burn injuries to her back. Neighbours used a small ladder to help the woman escape the blaze through an upstairs window, police said on Wednesday. The father and a child, 4, were unhurt.

Man lay dead in house for six weeks

A man, 77, lay dead in a house in the southern city of Eindhoven for six weeks. Police say his body was only discovered after neighbours complained of a mysterious stench and it was realised the man had not been seen for some time. He died of natural causes.

KPN blocks ADSL customers

Dutch telecoms firm KPN blocked internet access for 7,500 of Fiberworld’s ADSL customers on Tuesday. Fiberworld is in dispute with KPN about its invoices. KPN said that Fiberworld owner, DIS Europe from Heerenveen, has not paid its bills for the purchase of ADSL lines since May last year.
