Dutch jazz benefit for New Orleans

19 September 2005

AMSTERDAM — A recording of the special benefit concert in Amsterdam for New Orleans jazz musicians is to be circulated worldwide by the Dutch foreign service Radio Netherlands.

A host of Dutch musicians and singers agreed to perform at the benefit in Amsterdam Concertgebouw on Monday evening. Some 1,100 tickets at EUR 75 each were sold by Monday afternoon for the event.

Through a partnership with the American Federation of Musicians, the money raised will be used to help musicians from the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina in finding housing and work, and in replacing damaged instruments.

The line up for Monday’s concert includes René Froger, Cor Bakker and tenor-saxophonist Hans Dulfer (father of the international star Candy Dulfer).

“They are among many musicians in Holland, as elsewhere, who have been tremendously influenced by the music of New Orleans and want to help in this time of need,” the organisers said.

The Dutch trade union for artists FNV Kiem has confirmed it will donate to the appeal.

Radio Netherlands agreed to record the concert broadcast selections on its short-wave transmissions. “In addition, a special hour-long musical programme will be offered to our partner stations, ” Radio Netherlands said.
