Dutch building automatic child porno detection system

The Dutch Forensic Institute NFI is working to build a computer system that can automatically recognize child pornography online.

The NFI is working in conjunction with Microsoft to develop software that allows a large number of files to be searched quickly for child pornography.

Often authorities find extremely large photo collections on the hard drives of pedophiles. These child porno collections frequently contain as many as a million images or films. Investigators have the daunting task of sifting through computers looking for child pornography. “It’s emotionally draining and time-consuming” says NFI researcher Erwin van Eijken.

Van Eijken points out that currently around 2000 times more data gets investigated by the NFI than back in 1998, but says it’s still necessary to devise smart methods to keep pace with the continuing growth of online data.
