Cocaine seized in tomb foundations

29 November 2004

AMSTERDAM — Police arrested people last week and seized 70kg of cocaine that were hidden in foundations for tombs originating from Mexico, the public prosecutor revealed Monday.

Officers with the National Detectives Unit arrested three Dutch nationals (aged 63, 50 and 44), two Mexicans and a Colombian at a stonemason’s yard in Gorinchem on 24 November.

A seventh suspect — identified as a 60-year-old Belgium resident and a brother of one of the Dutch suspects — was arrested on Saturday.

The shipment of drugs had been transported from Mexico via Houston in the US and Luxembourg to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. US authorities alerted Dutch authorities to the transport.

The drugs were found hidden inside eight rubber columns with steel casing inside. Detectives are investigating three other shipments the suspects are alleged to have been involved in.
