You're buying a new home in the Netherlands and thinking of taking out a loan from a Dutch bank. The process is not as hard as you think. Here is what you need to know. [Contributed by Postkrediet]

You're an expat starting a new life in the Netherlands. You would like to take out a loan to afford things that will make this country feel like your new home. But is it possible to get a loan from a Dutch bank? The answer is a resounding yes. There are, however, certain restrictions. Let us point them out for you:

1. Income

You need to have a secure income to get a loan. If you’re doing seasonal work or if you’re working on call, the bank might have some issues with this arrangement. To ease any uncertainties, you have to explain your situation and show some proof of your income and contract of employment in order for the bank to decide if your income is steady enough.

2. History of employment

If you just arrived in the Netherlands and have only started working, you will have to be patient. Loans are mostly granted to people with a history of employment. That means that you have been working in Holland for at least three years.

3. Dutch bank account

If you hoped to get your loan transferred to your foreign bank account, you will be disappointed as Dutch banks only transfer to their own provided bank accounts or other Dutch bank accounts. However, it will be possible to transfer the funds to your foreign bank account as soon as you get a loan.

4. Residence permit

Do you need a residence permit to be granted a loan from a Dutch bank? If you’re an expat from outside of the EU, then yes, you have to. You will need a permanent residence permit.

So, where do you go from here? If you’re an EU expat and you have met the requirements of employment contract and employment history, you can apply for a loan. Remember that every bank has different loans on offer. Some have lower interest rates while others give higher lines of credit. Get well informed to see which offer is the best for you.
