One of the major collections of Rembrandt van Rijn paintings can be found at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In the theme year Rembrandt & The Golden Age the museum will put all 18 paintings that were acquired as ‘Rembrandts’ on display. There are Rembrandt’s best works, such as The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, Saul and David, and his last Self Portrait from 1669.

  • All Rembrandts at the Mauritshuis in a single exhibition.
  • Discover the story behind the eighteen paintings.
  • Can you see the difference between a real and a counterfeit Rembrandt?

However, not all works that were bought as having been painted by Rembrandt, are real. In addition to the undisputed real Rembrandts, there is also some doubt about two portraits ascribed to the master. And five paintings in the Mauritshuis collection are now no longer ascribed to the great painter.

Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis

After the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague possesses the greatest collection of paintings by Rembrandt in Holland. For the very first time in its history, the Mauritshuis will put the entire collection on display. The special story of how each painting ended up in the museum collection is told in the exhibition. Who discovered the painting? Was it bought or donated? How was it examined? Why (and how) did some paintings turn out not to be Rembrandt?

Come see and compare

How can you see the difference between a real Rembrandt and a counterfeit painting? The Mauritshuis collection contains eleven paintings that are indisputably by Rembrandt himself. After thorough investigation, it is still in doubt whether two paintings were made by Rembrandt himself or one of his apprentices. And it has been proven that five paintings are not original Rembrandts but copies or were painted by one of his apprentices. Discover what makes a Rembrandt a real Rembrandt at the Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis exhibition.
