International School Breda: after-school activities

International School Breda expands with modern facilities for students

The family atmosphere and excellent education at the International School of Breda allows children of expats and locals to thrive. Now, with its new expanded building, students will have even more opportunity to learn and grow. [Contributed by the International School Breda]

The new building embraces the school’s warm, family-like atmosphere that both students and parents appreciate, a cornerstone of the design. The building will comprise motivating classrooms, a PE room, a science lab, a library and a canteen capable of providing hot meals.

Attached to the classrooms will be the designated Early Years playground, a spacious place where the youngest students can play and engage in outdoor learning. Older students will have their own outdoor area for socialisation with their peers.

Expanded parking facilities, including a larger Kiss & Ride zone for parents dropping off children, are also included in the plans. The new facilities—designed by architects at RoosRos—will be able to accommodate around 350–400 students. The building is set to welcome students at the end of 2018, provided there are no delays.

A growing international school for expat children of all ages

Over the past five years, the number of students at ISB has grown considerably. At the start of its first academic year (2011–12) the school welcomed 40 primary and secondary students. The school now has an enrolment of 320 students representing over 45 nationalities. Around 50 teaching and support staff members (11 nationalities) have found employment at International School Breda, and are praised for their expertise and enthusiasm.

The school has also recently opened a nursery division, as ISB feels it is important that children aged 3 have an enjoyable introduction to school life to give them a solid foundation for the more formal learning they will encounter as they move into Reception and Year 1.

Activities for children outside the classroom

Activities outside school will be held in the same building and playgrounds. It is an ideal place for expat families to take their children to school at the start of the day and pick them up when the afterschool club finishes. In addition to the daily out-of-school clubs, the ISB offers each term a short run (six to eight weeks) of afterschool activity clubs. These clubs focus on specific activities such as arts and crafts, creative play and sports.

Afterschool activities

The International School Breda is situated in a rich environment: it is located right next door to Dutch secondary school Mencia de Mendoza College, which gives the international secondary students the opportunity to socialise and work together with their Dutch peers.
Students, teachers and parents eagerly await the move to the spacious new building, which will allow the school to grow and establish itself further in the coming years. The International School Breda aspires to secure a long-term, permanent location within the city of Breda and to establish a fulfilling relationship with the municipality and local international businesses.
