Dear Kyle,

I live in Den Haag and I have just completed my first freelance writing job. I wrote several short pieces of content for a website and made some suggestions about how the site could be made more user friendly, many which my employer has implemented. I am meeting him next week to discuss payment.

I am not totally inexperienced, since I have a good degree in English Literature and I have completed an internship where I wrote project funding proposals for a film company.

However, this was my first official freelance writing gig I have absolutely no idea how much I should ask to be paid! In total I only wrote around 1000 words, but spent a lot of time researching and familiarising myself with the site. Do you know if there is a standard kind of rate in the Netherlands for writers with limited experience? Is it normal to ask to be paid per word or per hour?

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

All the best,
Phoebe

Dear Angus,
I am partner in a v.o.f. and we would like to offer a place to a stagiair for work experience. I understand from a quick search of the Belastingdienst website that stagiairs and part-time workers have the same rights as full-time employees in the Netherlands. I would like to ask how much admin is involved in taking on an intern - is it a big burden for a small company such as ours? Many thanks in advance.

Dear Angus,

I would like to start a company with a friend of mine (Swedish living in France). The company would be an online business selling hand made clothes from natural materials. For the begining we would start with kids program.
I've got information from KVK that VOF would be the best form in that case. However, starting VOF makes us both fully relable for whatever claim that it might apear. We are not planning to take any loans, so I am not worried that much about it. But, since we would work with kids clothes I do not know if it might happen that someone sue us that a child got a rash or whatever similar. I do not expect that, but you never know... Therefore, we thought that B.V. might be a better option. As a B.V. we need to have certain taxable income for director. In KVK they told me that we can ask Tax authorities to have an exception on this since we are just starting...
Third segment is that I am currently on unemployment benefits and I do not want to lose it.
My questions are:
1. Are there any limitation for me (regarding rights on unemployment benefits) to start any form of the company? Or are there any consequences I should be aware of?
2. Which company form would be better for us, having in mind that we are just starting but would like to avoid situations that someone could put a claim on some of our properties because of some sue case for example?

Many thanks in advance and best regards,
Ana

Dear Angus,
my partner and I will be moving to the Netherlands in September for studies (his studies) & work. He has been accepted in the university of Utrecht & Groningen. As we will be financing his studies on our own, the ideal plan would be for him to have a part time job and for me to work full-time. Could you advice us on which city has more job opportunities?
Thank you in advance,
Nikoleta

Dear Angus,

I was wondering about the (1) steps, (2) estimated time and (3) fee for certifying a Dutch company's invoice and a CvO (Certificaat van Oorsprong/Certificate of Origin) from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so that they are recognized in countries outside of the EU as legal. Thank you in advance.
