Double yummy whammy for chef Veyrat

PARIS, Jan 27 (AFP) – French chef Marc Veyrat scored a double first Tuesday, getting an unbeatable 20 out of 20 in the latest GaultMillau guide for each of the two restaurants he runs in the French Alps.

Last year GaultMillau – which with the Michelin Red Guide is seen as the arbiter of French fine-dining – gave Veyrat top marks for his Auberge de l’Eridan in Annecy, open from May to November. In 2004 it matches that with a second 20 for My Father’s Farm at Megeve, open the other half of the year.

The guide created controversy a year ago when it downgraded the Burgundy restaurant of Bernard Loiseau from 19 to 17, contributing – according to some of his colleagues – to his suicide a week later.

In the new listing, his restaurant in Saulieu maintains its 17 points, and the guide says that the new team, “clearly well-motivated is successfully going to do a Loiseau without Loiseau.”
