Republic, the owner of US Frontier Airlines, has signed a preliminary agreement to buy 80 A320neo family aircraft worth $7 billion at list prices, Airbus said Wednesday at the Paris Air Show.

The order is for 40 A320neo and 40A319neo, the latest versions of Airbus' popular medium-haul aircraft with newer engines promising 15 percent fuel savings, that should begin entering service in 2015.

Republic has chosen engines to be produced by CFM, a joint venture of US General Electric and France's Safran.
