French rock'n'roll legend Johnny Hallyday has visited Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski who is under house arrest in Switzerland facing extradition on child sex offences, the singer's entourage told AFP on Thursday.

The rocker known as the French Elvis met Polanski on Tuesday while on holiday in the Swiss Alpine ski resort of Gstaad, a playground for showbusiness stars in later life and where both men have a chalet.

In October, Hallyday leapt to the defence of the detained septuagenarian, calling the affair "a trap" and appealing to authorities to "just leave the guy alone."

The French-Polish director has been on house arrest since December, pending Switzerland's decision on whether to send him to the United States where he faces a child sex case dating back to 1977.

Hallyday, 66, whose own career spans five decades, is recovering from surgery in December, which forced him to cancel his farewell tour.
